The film is set in post-nuclear Tokyo in a dimension not so distant from ours. What would it be like to see the world from the claustrophobic intimacy behind a faceplate? In our protagonist's morning commute through Tokyo, the masks are mundane, a minor inconvenience that is almost comical, but at the same time an unsettling sign of a lurking menace.
